About Us

Hello, thanks for stopping
in. The us in "About Us" is me, Karen Hagin, the designer and owner, my purple feline, Lester, and my terrific husband, Ken. Yes, I
truly do get feline help and supervision. Here's a picture of my purple
cat, Lester. He's helping me here by watching, but every once in a while he
gives me a paws up or a swipe of disapproval. As you can see, he takes his
job very seriously.

The true motivation behind
Purple Cat Jewelry Designs is that I enjoy adornment. Putting on jewelry is my
REWARD for getting dressed. I often linger to try on these earrings or
that bracelet to find what looks best. Along with this is my strong desire
for variety. I really like variety. The
event that caused me to begin creating jewelry was losing an earring somewhere
in a motel parking lot in Slidell, LA. I really liked those earrings so much
that not having them wouldn't do. I began examining the parts and thought,
"I can make these earrings if I can find the parts." Off I went
to look at a store called Friendze. I created pieces using whatever I liked, but
over time I began to pay more attention to quality. I also was introduced to
lampwork beads. A fellow teacher, Dana Meanor, told me about lampwork
beads (Dana creates beautiful jewelry. See the links page to get to her
site.) After a few purchases from lampwork artists, I was delighted with
these beads. Please read about these beads on my FAQ page. At this time, I have
plenty of lampwork beads to keep me busy making some gorgeous jewelry.

| I am writing this page for all of
the terrific lampwork artists, jewelers, and website owners who have
shared. I've enjoyed reading other people's stories and looking at
pictures. How could I not include my own? I recognize
those brave enough to share a story and not just sell an item. Here's a short part of my story...
I live in Katy, Texas with my
wonderful husband, Ken. We have three cats; Samson, Lester, and Sawyer.
During some years I teach elementary school or junior high language arts.
I have other hobbies, mainly quilting.

| Lester is not the only one who
takes his job seriously. I also take this Purple Cat stuff seriously; look at
what I drive. It really is fun, for me, that is. Ken limits his trips in
this vehicle and wants me to drive when we travel in the "Cat Sub". Ken and
our neighbor declined to take this Suburban to Home Depot recently and opted to
take Darrel's manly truck instead. I know you may be asking why such a big
vehicle with only 2 people and 3 cats. Well, you drive Houston traffic for a
while and you'll want some big protection, too. The sub does get noticed,
especially by take-out servers. A teenage boy even remembered me the second time
I came back to Schlotzsky's Deli. The signs on both sides also make me drive
nicely.
